Non-contact temperature measurement is recommended whenever a traditional sensor could damage/contaminate the product or it could not assure correct temperature reading of moving objects and materials.
Infrared technology is suitable for applications in food industry, plastics industry, footwearmaking, textile and paper industry. Special caution is required for translucent materials: to get reliable measurements, it is necessary to cover part of the target with black varnish which allows to get 0,95 standard emissivity.  
The following diagram is an example of infrared sensor connected to controller ATR242. The setting of parameters includes configuration of digital input for HOLD function: measured value is hold on display to make the reading easier.
